Sandra L Nelson, PhD

Sandra Nelson is responsible for the High-Throughput Screening (HTS) and Assay Development Lab. Assay development and HTS services are provided as part of the Drug Discovery Core. Biochemical and cell-based assays can be used to screen the University of Cincinnati’s Compound Library, or compounds supplied by the service user. Sandra considers herself an analytical biochemist and provides consulting on assay development, HTS assay methods utilizing sophisticated chemistry for homogeneous assays, follow-up screening, designing assay screening tiers, laboratory automation, and use of database and HTS software tools.
Before joining GRI in September 2006, Sandra was responsible for the HTS and Compound Repository facility for P&G Pharmaceuticals. During her 18 year career with P&G, she also performed research to develop new over-the-counter products for P&G (toothpaste, mouthwash, cough & cold medicines, gastrointestinal medicine), and developed and ran biochemical assays, including those for clinical studies, helping to develop new pharmaceutical products. Sandra worked at the USDA National Animal Disease Center studying diseases of agricultural animals, and at the USDOE Ames Laboratory developing new measurement methods for environmental carcinogens and possible biological hazards. She received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a B.S. in biochemistry from Iowa State University.
